Career Fair 2006 — RIM Park

09:17 Thu 28 September 2006; 270 | by Ryan | in uncategorized

Wednesday I went to the Career Fair at RIM Park. I saw Yasir on the way to the bus, so I talked to him about talking to recruiters at the fair as he marked off company booths he wanted to visit.

When we got there we got a map and marked off which booths he wanted to go to.

I got a load of pens and other things as well. Some company was giving out Wonderbread. There were chips, hotrods, brownies, and candy. There were other gimmicky toys, paraphernalia, and kitsch.

I saw Rahul at the Infusion booth and he gave me a t-shirt. The t-shirt says “code hero” and depicts a Pai-Mei—looking character with the words “.net ninja” over his leg. He said he knew that I could get the t-shirt seen. I told him I would put it on my website to promote Infusion Development and Infusion Angels.

Yesterday’s local section of The Rec has a story about a homeowner who says she is “ready to throw in the towel” or that there should be more high-density apartment buildings, which would make it more difficult to have large parties.

Check out the salacious and raucous scene described in the following section of “Parties too much for mom” (more…)

bizSmart is closing

16:25 Mon 11 September 2006; 253 | by Ryan | in uncategorized

My business bank is discontinuing its service:

Important news: The bizSmart offer will be discontinued as of November 30, 2006.

bizsmart logo

A wikipedia article explains the situation:

bizSmart was one of the first virtual banks to be opened in Canada during the dot-com era. Its concept was to provide service through bank machines, Web and telephone service, and to provide a human presence by subletting space at retail stores such as Staples]. As the small business electronic banking offering through CIBC, it shares many of the CIBC’s systems including the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) infrastructure.

Its model of customer interaction mostly though automated systems turned out make it difficult to provide efficient customer service through a call center, and thus strained its profitability, and it was absorbed back into CIBC’s mainstream small business offering. bizSmart operated briefly, and stopped accepted new applications on November 7, 2002.

Bizsmart provided no-fee business banking apparently intending to rely on over-draft interest charges to cover operating costs and profits. Low interest rates and the lack of service charges contributed to its lack of profitability. The bank cancelled all existing accounts effective November 30, 2006.

I may have to find another bank for a business account.

Check out Toronto band: Lickpenny Loafer

16:10 Mon 11 September 2006; 253 | by Ryan | in uncategorized

I saw a old friend this past weekend. He plays in a band in Toronto, Lickpenny Loafer.

Lickpenny Loafer is:
Arunachal - vocals, guitar
Devin - bass
Mike - drums

To be a musician is not necessarily a choice. Like many other things, it begins and continues on with a slow, rising compulsion. We start with an ideal in mind, only to have it shattered and recreated a thousand more times. Fruition is here today, gone tomorrow. But, there is much solace in the appreciation of the process. For one who is unknown, it can bring tremendous gratification and much needed lift. And so I share my process- not just to energize a waning ego, but to offer another voice for any who wish to hear.

On the way back from work

17:58 Fri 08 September 2006; 250 | by Ryan | in uncategorized

On the way home from work on Wednesday I was waiting in stopped traffic on Bridge and I looked in the rearview mirror. The driver behind me looked familiar. It was Veetay. I waved and he squinted and half-waved back. I stuck my head out the window and called out. He recognized me then and said “Stop by the house.”

He had to stop for gas but he called Ms. Veetay and she received me and we chatted and he soon arrived. Sonia was there too. They invited me to stay for dinner. We had chili. We made plans to plan to get kids together for Oktoberfest.
