Ignatieff and puffins; Franklin, snakes, and the jack

Deputy leader of the Liberal Party of Canada Michael Ignatieff has suggested that the puffin be the symbol of the party.

“It’s a noble bird because it has good family values. They stay together for 30 years,” Ignatieff said Thursday outside a Liberal caucus retreat in the Newfoundland and Labrador capital.

“They lay one egg (each year). They put their excrement in one place. They hide their excrement. . . . They flap their wings very hard and they work like hell.

“This seems to me a symbol for what our party should be.”

It seems to me that his comments are something that excites news editors because they see it as a quirky, colourful story that will spark watercooler conversations. Really, it is just an inconsequential story that will come to nothing.

It did make me think of Benjamin Franklin though. People say that he suggested the turkey as the symbol of the United States of America rather than the eagle.
