NYTBitsblog says Yahoo is making a new social networking site.

The site, which began an invitation only preview Friday, is quite an homage to Facebook, but it adds one significant new wrinkle: users can edit each other’s profiles, redecorating, changing information, and adding features. Think the Wikipedia version of a social network.

It seems a little weird. Why is the editing of other people’s profiles important as a differentiating feature? Mashblog has some answers including “You can make starter profiles for your friends.” and “You can customize your — or your friend’s : ) — profile with modules from a growing gallery of apps.”

By giving more people power to edit profiles is part of a strategy of propagation of accounts and of applications.
