Trip to New York

I haven’t recorded anything about our trip to New York City.

So here are our adventures in several points:

  • Left for Buffalo early in the morning
  • Parked at the Pearl Street parkade operated by the Buffalo Civic Auto Ramp
  • Walked down Main towards bus, got lost
  • Asked direction to Ellicot Street, kid didn’t know (it was one block away)
  • We found Ellicot and got the the bus station (it is right by the library, I still have a library card from that library too)
  • Waited for the bus
  • The bus was late getting from the border. Kept waiting.
  • Talked to woman from Caledonia who was going to Albany. Kid from suburban Buffalo whow as going to D.C. got frustrated
  • Arrived at the station by Times Square
  • Walked to our hotel
  • Checked out Rockefeller Center and watched the people skate wobblily.
  • Saw lights in Times Square.
  • Watched about a dozen police cars lined up on Broadway and then zoom downtown one after the other.
  • Ate grilled food from a stand
  • Went to Columbia
  • Gave a kid from Yale directions (though I had never been there before)
  • Visited entrepreneurial finance class at the GSB
  • Walked through Harlem
  • Stopped by 7-eleven to buy speakout phone
  • Left 7-eleven to avoid being cheated
  • Caught the 6 train downtown
  • Met up with a friend at a raw vegan food restaurant
  • Got luggage at hotel and caught a cab to Brooklyn over the Manhattan bridge
  • Slept.
  • Got up.
  • Took the train back to the island
  • Had breakfast at a Crusty deli, which had kosher and non-kosher food prep sections
  • Went to the Guggenheim and saw works by Cai Guo-Qiang as well as some works by Picasso, Monet, and some other painters
  • Walked to the reservoir in Central Park.
  • Walked through the park. Stopped at the Belvedere
  • Walked out of the park and through park west.
  • Toured around the foyer of the Natural History museum.
  • Looked at the murals and statue of Teddy.
  • Saw some brownstones
  • Got a coffee at Cafe La Fortuna
  • Talked to a crazy conspiracy dude who said hidden forces were boosting Obama in a complicated ploy to get elected Bloomberg as president.
  • Went back to the park. Climbed some rocks.
  • Left the park. Stopped outside the Apple store.
  • Went east to Bloomingdales, were told not to loiter near the entrance
  • Bought a sweater at Hennes & Mauritz
  • Got some pizza at Mariella. Dudes asked us if we wanted a beer “Colest beer in Manattan.” he said. Another clerk asked us whether we had paid. We said yes. He said “Do you want to pay again.” Our friend was right when he had told us that NY is about one-liners after I had made a joke referring to earlier conversation.
  • Went to the Waldorf-Astoria
  • Asked the concierge where to get a Waldorf salad.
  • Went to the Bull and Bear.
  • Asked the bartender whether the Waldorf salad was good. He said, “It should be we invenned it.
  • Ordered a Waldorf salad and lobster bisque.
  • Ate the Waldorf salad. It was good.
  • Stopped in Grand Central Station.
  • Walked by Empire State Building
  • Bought postcards.
  • Caught the train downtown.
  • Walked around Soho.
  • Bought some clothing at Uniqlo
  • Went to Sake bar Decibel.
  • Bought some beer before heading back to Brooklyn. Got a free glass. Sweet.
  • Hung out at friends’ place.
  • Slept.
  • Got up.
  • Went out to Nono for breakfast (North of New Orleans).
  • Ate cheese grits, gumbo, red beans and rice, and chicken steak.
  • Drove to in to check out Ellis Island.
  • Waited in line. Listened to a busker ask where people were from and sing songs about those places. He sang a Canada song.
  • We visited the World Trade Center memorial.
  • Went to nearby St. Paul’s
  • Ate lunch.
  • Walked around. Stopped by a Peruvian restaurant. Drank a Manhattan.
  • Back to Brooklyn.
  • Had dinner at a new restaurant called Sidecar. It was good.
  • We zipped back to the bus station on the train. Waited for the train.
  • Some dude from Sudbury said I loked familiar.
  • We caught an earlier bus 22:45. Off we went.
  • Slept a bunch of the way. Got off in Buffalo. Walked in cold windy weather.
  • Bought stamps and sent postcards at the Hyatt. I had to do the math for the clerk.
  • Got the car at the Pearl BCAR. We didn’t have enough U.S. dollars to cover parking, but the kiosk dude accepted Canadian dollars just fine.
  • Drove back and went into work that afternoon.
