writing exams at Waterloo

When Waterloo changed their final examination schedule to have four exams per day back in 2005, they introduced certain measures in the event that a student was scheduled for consecutive exams. I was in that situation before, having two exams in a row on the first day.

I was forwarded to the information about a proposal suggesting removing that relief.

Mike Brown radio training in Sierra Leone

Mike Brown is going to Sierra Leone to train radio journalists with Journalists for Human Rights.

He is writing about it on his blog that is named for the low life-expectancy of the Sierra Leoneans.

“Hi Mike, thanks for holding. We were calling to offer you the position of radio trainer in Sierra Leone …”

Never mind that it wasn’t the position I applied for and my radio experience was a whopping one year with Laurier’s less than stellar, online-only campus radio station. I accepted immediately. And then smiled a lot. I rejoiced with Trish and called the friends I knew would be most eager to hear the news. And then I prepared for a more solemn encounter, as I heard the door open and my mom arrive home.

“Mom, I have bad news … I got the job.”

Pre-wedding man-party for iDoug

We met at a coffee shop in Kensington Market for Ian’s pre-wedding man-party. It had been organized by Ted and Shawn. Serge and I drove up. After we got to the shop we realized that our guys were occupying the whole place.

We bought vintage clothes in the market: a velour sweater, a “roach musk” t-shirt, polyester houndstooth pantaloons, a fuzzy tiger cap, mirror aviators, and cowboy boots.

We had lunch at the burrito place, then we were off to the races.

Our quarter-final cup match

If you were to ask me how my soccer team did against the higher seeded team from a higher division in quarter-final play yesterday night, I would say: “We won 5-0.”

We played Mladost who came second in the higher division. We handily shut down their attack and our offence made it happen with an early goal. Hans opened the scoring with a long shot from way outside the box.

We ended the half 3-0. The sun was setting so we played the second half under the lights.

Though they have some strong strikers, we repeatedly repelled their attacks, turned it over and brought it back to them.

Late in the game Ben deked the keeper and the keeper just grabbed onto his ankle and tripped him to stop him from scoring. The referee rightfully booked the keeper for thwarting an obvious goalscoring opportunity with a foul.

Another player stood in for the penalty and Steve hit it home.

We are off to the semi-final next week.
