The new elite in society are a mix of hippy ideals and high-powered capitalism. David Brooks writes his observations on this cultural blending in BOBOS* in Paradise (* bourgeois bohemians) “The New Upper Class and How They Got There.”

Brooks open the book comparing wedding announcements in the New York Times over time. The announcements of the old WASP elite of the 1950s referred to parents and pedigree, social clubs, and debutante history. That compares to those of later times and today which focus on universities, degrees and jobs.
