519 getting an overlay area code

Southwestern Ontario is getting an overlay according to the notice I received in the mail. Ten-digit dialing has begun. Soon new numebrs will be issued with a 226 area code. Montreal is also getting anotehr area code 438 to complement 514.

The sum of pulses in 519 is 15; the new 226's sum is 10. Montreal's sums are 10 (the older 514) and 15 (the newer 438).

Back before tone dialing numbers were dialed with clicks with one being one and 0 being 10 pulses. I heard before that area codes for bigger places were made to have fewer pulses (like part of Manhatt'n that has 212).

When I was a youth I tried dialing by clicking the number out on the (what's it called) thing you hang the phone up on and it worked, yeah.

Consecutive exams in the new schedule

This spring term is the first time Waterloo is implementing the four-a-day exam schedule and I am one of the few with a violation. The new policy has specified situations of too many exams too close together that it will "strive" to avoid. I, with only two exams to write, have both exams in consecutive blocks on the first day of examinations. Because of the violation I am eligible to request relief which would mean an additional hour or so between my exams.

Match #4 Strength vs Gunners 886

soccer team

With our fourth match we would move into the second half of the season still looking for our first win. It would be against the lowest ranked team in the league. After three matches they had three losses and were down by 12 goals. Unfortunately for our goal count, they couldn't field a team and we got a default win.

We scrimmaged anyway and I played in goal for the last third or so, so Trav could get a run on the pitch.

Magda writes about Brent's Bicycle Forest business

couch bike

The sustainability project invited Brent to bring his unusual bicycles out for their earth week, which coincides with the commuter challenge week. I told Magda that she should contact him and pitch a story if no one has yet. Magda is working at The Rec.

I ran into Brent in the fall and he told me about what he was up to. He has a website and bicycle business called The Bicycle Forest. I linked to The Bicycle Forest in October.

Magda wrote about him and his bikes for today's paper. Here is part of it:

Match #3 Strength vs School of Football

team strength match 3

After the third week of competition, we are the only team that has a spirit-of-competition score that qualifies us for the post-season.

In the afternoon Laura e-mailed me asking to join the team. She played with us last summer. She showed up and played the match with us. Because Steve had hurt his knee Travis tended the goal. The refereeing was good; Patrick and Colin officiated. Late in the second half I received a caution.

Match #2 vs Five-star A05 Strength

team strength match 2

Our second match was a week later against five-star (I believe it to be named after the red china flag). Before the match the opposing captain proposed that both teams commit to giving each other the highest sportsmanship ratings (they had gottent he lowest possible rating in their first match). I told him that he could ensure the highest rating through the conduct of his team.

Colin and Kyle refereed the match.
