I hear a long time ago that Coupland mentioned Bombshelter in his book Microserfs, but I didn't actually find the reference until today.
The book is copyright 1995. I remember reading a modified magazine excerpt of it in 1994, maybe in Wired. It is roughly a fictional diary of a Microsoft employee, Daniel.

We left before nine in the morning driving through the small towns on our way to Lake Huron. Though most of the trip went past farm fields, small towns, and Tim Hortons, and houses also zipped past.
We first saw the water as we crested a hill at Point Clark. Near shore the brown of dirt kicked up by the waves turned into light and then dark blues. We parked in a sandy cul-de-sac and went out onto the beach. I walked; she ran.
